Three Broadband

5G Convergent Charging, Billing and Self Service

Three launched in 2003 as the UK’s first 3G only network, laying its foundations as the network that was born to be different. Three is now a connectivity company that connects people to people, people to things and things to things and has almost 12 million active customers on its network. An average Three customer uses 3.5 times more mobile data than the industry average.

Three launched its 5G service, initially in London, during August 2019 and at the time was the only UK operator able to meet the International Telecoms Union (ITU) 2020 standard for full 5G services.

Three revolutionised the broadband market by doing things differently, including no landline, simple pricing, flexible contracts, unlimited data, same day delivery and a 14-day money back guarantee. Targeted at people and businesses who demanded fibre-fast speeds but without the complications associated with traditional broadband, Three’s 5G service offering provided fibre-fast broadband but no hassle of installation delays, landlines or engineer visits.

Three offered transparent pricing with unlimited data packages but without forcing customers to pay for fixed telephone lines that they didn’t want. Combined with this, the company offered flexible pricing options: no 18 or 24 month contracts. Customers could buy fibre-fast wireless broadband for just one month at a time or opt for a 12-month contract if they preferred.

The Challenges

In a race to launch 5G services alongside the UK’s other mobile operators, Three needed a fast time-to-market to capitalise on the opportunities presented by their 5G network rollout.

Key BSS requirements for Three included:

  • Flexible product catalogue and pricing options to differentiate in a highly competitive market
  • 3GPP standards-based convergent charging for data-centric services
  • Support multi-channel sales and customer services, including a mobile first strategy for online self-service
  • Rapid order fulfilment to ensure broadband devices could be delivered on the same day

The Results

Three achieved its goal, launching 5G services in London on 19th August 2019, with a commitment to deliver 5G to 25 towns and cities by the end of the year. Three offered a simple-to-use ‘fibre-fast’ service for homes and businesses, enabling customers to ‘cut the cord’ and use 5G for all their broadband needs.

Three’s 5G broadband solution was built on the Convergent Charging System, Revenue Manager, CRM Plus, Service Manager, Self Service, Output Streamer and Information Manager modules from Cerillion’s pre-integrated product suite, providing a digital BSS platform which delivered the operational efficiency and customer-centric service needed to fully exploit the 5G opportunity.

“5G home broadband is a game-changer for connectivity in the home” said Ros Singleton, Managing Director, Three Broadband. “Cerillion’s pre-integrated Enterprise BSS/OSS suite provides us with seamless integration across all back office systems and processes, meaning we can focus on our 5G rollout, with a robust and reliable platform to support our business.”
