Facebook developing new feature for paid subscriptions

In a bid to fight fake news and help news publishers derive more value from Facebook, the social media giant is expected to roll out a paid subscription feature by the end of 2017. With this feature, users will be able to subscribe to publishers directly from the Facebook mobile app. It is widely expected that the feature will be available only on Facebook’s Instant Articles platform, and Facebook may adopt a metered paywall for this feature, a strategy successfully used by many media and publishing companies worldwide. This move will also come as a boon to publishers who have long been trying to use digital subscriptions to drive revenue growth.

How Adobe is ruling the subscriptions game

Not many gave Adobe a chance of succeeding when it transitioned from a product-sales model to a cloud-based subscription model five years ago. Many were of the opinion that the subscription model would undercut the high profit margins of Adobe’s creative suite of products. Oddly, there was also a Change.org petition asking that the company abandon this model. However, the company has not only survived, but thrived with this new approach. Adobe’s revenue was close to $5.9 billion, up from $4 billion in 2013. More than 80% of these revenues came from subscriptions and recurring payments.

Netflix subscriptions overtake Cable TV in the US

OTT streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu have long been gnawing away at the archaic cable television industry. And now it’s official – Netflix subscribers have surpassed Cable TV subscribers for the first time in the US. According to a new Statista report, Netflix now has 50.9 million subscribers compared with 48.6 million subscribers for cable TV companies. This clearly illustrates the evolution of the new media entertainment landscape, where Netflix is now the undisputed leader.
