Fitbit moves beyond hardware towards subscriptions

Fitbit has struggled to compete in the smartwatch segment with tech giant Apple. However, the company is now following in Apple’s footsteps by launching a new subscription service. The wearable maker has announced Fitbit Premium, which will provide in-depth insights about users’ sleep, fitness and overall health, including personalised health insights. Fitbit Premium will be launched in September and cost $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year.

Amazon-owned Eero launches new subscription service

Router-maker Eero has announced a new subscription service, which will expand upon its existing subscription plan. Eero already had a subscription plan called Eero Plus which will now be called Eero Secure+ and cost $9.99 per month (or $99 annually). In addition, the company is launching a cheaper plan called Eero Secure which is priced at $2.99 per month or $29 if billed annually.

Spotify tests in-app ‘create podcast’ button

Spotify wants to encourage content producers to create podcasts on its platform. The company is now testing a new ‘create podcast’ button that will redirect users to the Spotify-owned Anchor app if already installed or send them to a webpage about the app. Spotify acquired Anchor earlier this year.

74% of US households have access to SVOD services

A new report has revealed that 74% of US households subscribe to SVOD services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. That’s an increase of 10% from last year. Remarkably, the number was around 52% in 2015. In addition, more than half of these households use multiple SVOD services.

US-based Tubi TV expands to Australia

US-based video streaming service Tubi TV has launched its service in Australia. Tubi joins the list of streaming services such as Netflix, Stan and Foxtel Now already available down under. Earlier this year, the company announced that it has passed 20 million monthly active users in the US.

Netflix driving growth of SVOD in France

According to a new report, total video entertainment consumer spend in France is expected to exceed €7 billion this year. Pay TV still accounts for 64% of that number but SVOD services have started to gain traction. Not surprisingly, subscription giant Netflix is the dominant player in France, with five million subscribers in 2018, accounting for half the SVOD market.

Hotstar leads Netflix, Amazon Prime Video in India

Local SVOD service Hotstar has raced ahead of international video streaming giants Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in India. Hotstar leads with 40% market share and even other local streaming players are gaining momentum as consumers shift from DTH to OTT services. According to a survey, at least 85% of the respondents have accessed an SVOD service over the last six months.
