Mexico City the most sophisticated digital music market for Spotify

Looks like Mexico’s capital enjoys listening to music more than any other city in the world. According to subscription service Spotify, Mexico City is now a thriving market for international artists with many big names staging concerts in the city. Previously, we reported that emerging markets may bring the next phase of growth for subscription businesses. Incidentally, Mexico City was also Spotify’s first Latin American market when it launched there in 2013.

Hulu’s value pegged at more than $9 billion by Disney

In a recent regulatory filing, Disney assigned the value of subscription streaming service Hulu to be $9.26 billion. The company laid out the valuation as part of a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, in which it detailed plans about its merger with Fox which is estimated to be a $71.3 billion deal. Hulu, which is only available to US-based subscribers, has 20 million users.

A new report now reveals that gifting is responsible for a quarter of the spending on subscription boxes in the UK. Gifting alone is a £160 million market and combined with the rapidly growing trend of ‘self-gifting’ which stands at £423 million, makes for a major chunk of subscription box revenues. The gifting market is extremely important for subscription boxes, especially in the current festive season. The UK subscription box market is expected to hit £1 billion by 2022.
